Dani Novak writes:
For the past 25 years, I have taught mathematical art and other interdisciplinary courses in the Math Department. My colleague David Rosenthal and I co-designed software called MuMart (formerly APGS, SeeLogo), which is used in many applications, from designing scientific graphics to teaching geometry, statistics, and calculus. But as a committed humanist, I most enjoy soul-to-soul communication with students. MuMart can be downloaded from

It is an amazing language with little publicity.

I've been studying music both for recreation and professionally for the past 14 years and am very excited that I have been able to connect this knowledge to mathematics and art. When I am not using APGS to translate sheet music into mathematical equations, I can be found practicing the trumpet in the Ithaca College School of Music's practice rooms or back at my apartment listening to classical music as I prepare for graduate school next fall."
Cyril will be graduating from Ithaca College this December (2010) with a Bachelor of Music in both Education and Performance.
About the project
This session will introduce you to a new piece of software, called MuMart (Music Math Art), programmed and developed by David Rosenthal with help of Dani Novak and support form Ithaca College. It can be used to create Dynamic Mathematical Art and to teach kids Mathematics in a meaningful way, so it will literally make sense to them. In this session we will introduce the software and one of my students will demonstrate their work.
One of the highlights of this session is the creation of an art piece called "The Spiral of Life" and showing how to transform it into a "Crystal of Life" in a dynamic way. We will also use GeoGebra to define the appropriate functions that will help us achieve the task. After this hour you will be able to create your own spiral of life and show it to friends and teach them how to do it. We hope that by doing this your own life will become like a beautiful crystal :) Recently Music Primitives were added to the language.
