JUMP Math is a numeracy program started in 1998 by mathematician, author and award-winning playwright
John Mighton. It is a federally registered charitable organization based in Toronto, Canada.
JUMP Math believes that all children can be led to think mathematically, and that with even a modest amount of attention every child will flourish. By demonstrating that even children who are failing math or who are labeled as slow learners can excel at math, it hopes to dispel the myths that currently prevail. JUMP Math offers educators and parents
**complete and balanced materials** as well as
**training** to help them reach
*all* students.
Described as
“a better way to teach math” in the New York Times, JUMP Math is an evidence-based approach to teaching mathematics. JUMP Math’s program has proven highly effective in developing math skills in students in Canada and the UK. A recent randomized controlled study led by researchers from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the University of Toronto shows that the math knowledge of children using JUMP Math grew twice as much as that of children using the usual methods of math instruction.
JUMP has grown rapidly and is currently being used by over 85,000 children in over 400 schools, tutoring programs and at home.
A prevalent myth that mathematical talent is a rare genetic gift creates a self-fulfilling prophecy of failure for many students. The effect is amplified by high math anxiety among many teachers. JUMP assumes that virtually every child can succeed in math. Our materials and training help teachers break math into the smallest conceptual units, build students' confidence and eliminate unnecessary hierarchies in the classroom.
JUMP Math's method of teaching mathematics results in significantly higher scholastic performance, along with major improvements in students’ self-esteem and attitudes towards learning. JUMP draws on the latest cognitive science research to build upon the best aspects of math programs from around the world.
JUMP’s unique combination of depth, careful scaffolding, continuous assessment and a variety of innovative instructional approaches enables teachers to accomplish the seemingly impossible task of teaching to the whole class while tailoring it to students’ individual needs. Results from studies and in-school evaluations consistently show that JUMP Math is highly effective in enabling students to become proficient at math. Struggling students close the gap, even as stronger students elevate their progress. JUMP Math keeps everyone energized, engaged and learning.
JUMP also recognizes that few elementary school teachers are math specialists, so we take special care to ensure that our Teachers’ Guides include clear explanations of math concepts and how they link to other subjects, other areas of math, real world applications, and higher level mathematics. JUMP Math’s lesson plans provide detailed scripts for teachers who need them, but can also be used as a resource package for teachers who just want guidance or ideas.
