Experience mathematics like never before in a whimsical puzzle hunt through the exciting Modultown! This is a sequel to a beloved adventure book (which can be read independently) with new characters to meet and new math powers to gain!

Modultown is a place where history repeats itself … but friends learn and grow along the way. Each inhabitant of Modultown is driven by an inner cycle that is reflected in their number of hands as well as their sleep patterns. When human siblings Emmy and Leo find themselves magically transported to this world, they adapt to its natural rhythms and make friends by joining a team puzzle competition. The team must combine their different perspectives to solve challenges that flesh out the mechanics of modular arithmetic.

Math storytelling? Why?

Modultown illustrations: characters playing active games around the town.

By personifying math through relatable characters in magical worlds, we show kids that math is alive and much more than a formula on a page. Mathematics is a language describing human phenomena and a canvas for creativity.

Just like the stories we love, many great inventions of mathematics start with a desire to express something in our world or to create fantastic worlds of our own. We believe that math and stories are complementary tools for building human understanding, transferring knowledge, and ingraining concepts in memory. We believe that every child has a math story to tell.

Meet the Team

Sasha Fradkin

Sasha Fradkin has loved math from an early age, and seeks to share that love with others. After receiving her PhD in mathematics from Princeton University, she worked for several years as a professional mathematician. Currently, Sasha is the Dean of STEM at the Main Line Classical Academy, a private school in Bryn Mawr, PA, where she develops the math curriculum. Since she started at MLCA, Sasha has taught math at every level from Kindergarten math through Calculus. In addition to working at MLCA, Sasha teaches enrichment math to children ages 8–15 at Golden Key Enrichment and teaches at several middle-school math camps over the summer. She enjoys math adventures with her two daughters and pondering exciting and engaging ways to present the beauty of mathematics to children.

Allison Bishop

Allison Bishop grew up with a passion for writing, and initially disliked math because it was presented as formulaic. She belatedly discovered the creative side of mathematics and science, and now sees it as a vital component of the curiosity that drives her life. She is currently the co-founder and President of Proof Trading, as well as a visiting professor of computer science at City College, CUNY. She has a PhD in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin, and is currently serving as the Vice President of the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). She remains an avid fiction enthusiast and writer, and is always seeking new ways to expose young minds to creative mathematical thinking and fuel their scientific curiosity. She is also a trained sketch and stand up comedian.

Mark Gonyea, the book’s illustrator, is a graphic artist, author, and tabletop game creator. A graduate of The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art, Mark found his first job as graphic artist for the comic magazine Heavy Metal. In 2005, with nearly a decade in graphic design behind him, he made the leap to writing and illustrating children’s books full time. His best-known books include A Book About Design, The Spooky Box, and One Little Monster. When not contemplating his next kids book or latest game, Mark spends his free time watching movies and playing video games. He hopes one day to get a dog.

Meet the Publisher

Math Is What You Make It

At the Natural Math Alliance, we believe that a good world is possible with better mathematics. Together with children, parents, teachers, and organizers, we help everyone grow a happy familiarity with all sixty-plus mathematics subjects as math makers. To match these goals, we developed a unique publishing process, giving authors, artists, and even readers a lot of creative control.

A book starts with amazing authors who deeply care about mathematics and learning. Each author spends many hours improving every aspect of the manuscript by testing the book with children, families, and classes.

Next comes our Future Book Club: the brave volunteers who field-test the draft in their own families, classes, math circles, book clubs, museum groups, and other programs. They come from all learning backgrounds and all continents (except Antarctica, so far), making Natural Math books more community-responsive and real.

Crowdfunding comes next. Thank you!

Our crew of professional editors, proofreaders, and designers are paid with the crowdfunding money. They make the book a joy to hold, each page or eBook screen a smooth reading experience. Natural Math books have been featured by The Atlantic, The NY Times, and many lovely sites dedicated to learning, parenting, and mathematics.

Creative Commons is love

As with all our previous books, Modultown! is published under a Creative Commons license. That means that people all over the world will be able to access its content, translate it into different languages—and share their ideas based on the book. The Creative Commons site features an interview with the Natural Math founder in its celebration of innovative projects in education.
